5am awesomeness

once again, waking up at 5am is great. that crispy air when you get outside. i love how it’s still dark. this the second time i’ve had to do this in the last two weeks. i wonder if the necessity will turn into a “want”.

maybe i’m pushing it a little.

wow i hate spam

you’re gonna have to login now to leave me a comment. all TWO of you. i don’t think any reads this anyway so it doesn’t matter, but holy crap i had to delete a lot of comments waiting my moderation. lots of crap out there i tell you. including this.

2006 Top 5 albums

number one
artist: cara beth satalino
album: crowded mouth

crowded mouth has everything i love in an album: i can listen to it straight through; i can sing along; if someone tries to talk to me while i’m listening i’ll tell them to shush, or i’ll pause the album for my favorite part. i really look forward to cara beth’s musical future. i have a feeling she’ll contribute a fair amount to our world.
number two
artist: silversun pickups
album: carnavas

this one grabbed me by my titties when i heard them the first time. i can’t explain. “future foe scenarios” played OVER and OVER on my headphones, in my car, in my head. obsessed. i’ve made fans of at least another 5 people. in fact, it was very hard to decide what my number one and number were going to be. i feel as if my number 1 and 2 here are interchangeable. i love them both!
number three
artist: lily allen
album: alright, still

cool. she’s bri-ish. and she says funny things. and has really unusual choruses.
number four
artist: regina spektor
album: begin to hope

i don’t know why this happened, but when i bought the cd i listened to it once and then put it away. i was angry. i didn’t like it. it’s a ll polished and nice unlike her previous “soviet kitsch” album. so raunchy and indie and annoying and awesome at the same time. but then KEXP started playing “Fidelity”…then they started playing “on the radio” and i thought i’d give it another try. goddamit, i was hooked. ’cause i’ve listened to it another 93847598 times. this is another great sing-along album. i even give it a try in russian.

number five
artist: tv on the radio
album: return to cookie mountain

how can you not love an album called ‘return to cookie mountain. tv on the radio is very different from anything i’ve heard, and yet i hear a few elements of familiarity. some of the harmonies remind me of prince, while other beats remind me of a broken record. how can you do that and make it work so well?

a gig for a good cause

virgina part deux: the interview.

friday: september 15, 2006.

we left off in the green: mountainous fieldsof bristol, va at the home of one of our heroes: charles vess.

it’s so sweet to wake up not-in-new-york-city. you know right away: it’s peaceful, it smells like fresh air, and i wasn’t awakened by the sound of truck breaks going down my hill.

today was the day of the interview. i was to appear on channel 5 12 o’clock news, bristol virginia.

charles took me to the building, and we hurried to bring my equipment in and waited. there was one more band there performing for the bristol rhythm and roots festival: old line skiffle combo. they were a riot. i’m just happy to say i have a buddy named Maynard now. who wouldn’t? they [the band, not JUST maynard] were really great.

so we waited…and waited…the president duble-yah was hoggin’ up all the tv channels with his live news conference. he was leaking into my time. i’m taking this personally. i already (openly) loathe do not like that bush. (the OTHER bush however…heh heh..but i digress…), but now this is getting personal. he’s dripping into my tv time. what if they don’t have time to interview me? what if they have to cancel the 12 o’clock news broadcast all together just because his idiocy takes way too long to formulate sentences during the Q&A section? i started writing letters in my head:

Dear Mr. President,

I didn’t like you then, and i like MUCH less now….

========

then it was over. the time was about 12:14pm. ok…and now back to our regularly scheduled broadcasts. (and for those who are interested, here are a few lines from the end of his speech: …It seems like to me that something is happening in the religious life of America. But I’m not a very good focus group, either. I’m encapsulated here. But I’m able to see a lot of people, and from my perspective, people are coming to say, I’m praying for you… <--- huh?)

they called me back into the room newsroom...and this is what happened:

Watch the video

there’s something really strange about seeing myself on television. i have a hard time with that. but i hope you enjoyed it.

throughout the day, people approached me with questions like, “are you the girl who performed on the 12 o’clock news?” with a really cute southern twang…”why yes i am!” with a really crass brooklyn clang. i signed a few autographs. had a few pictures taken of me. it was super sweet. then i slept on the couch. again. i dunno. i was tired?!?!

that night we went and saw the divineMAGgees perform. at the show we met sheri. (hi sheri!!!!), a great childhood friend of karen’s who turned out to be someone you felt like you knew all your life. she introduced me to susan lachman who has songs from SKIN on rotation on her WETS radio show called Women on Air. sheri also introduced me to Leah–project manager for the entire festival. yeah, so sheri hooked me up w/the peeps i needed to know.

it was really great to meet the maggees in person. they were super sweet. and super tired. they drove for 12 hours since 5am…and had to play a show. what we do for music, eh?

me on TV. cute. scary. dorky.

this is the lil interview/performance on bristol’s local channel 5 12 o’clock news:
